Songs Inspire My Writing

If you need an inspiration boost, then dig through your CD’s or search your playlist for a song that matches the scene you have to write. For me, rock music is my go to genre for any action scene. Love songs obviously work great for love scenes. But if you don’t like lyrics in the music you listen to while you write, there are many classical masterpieces that can fit the tone of the event you have to write, too.

My colorful headphones. :)

Here are 5 songs that have inspired my writing:

1.    Somewhere by Within Temptation

In the last book of my unpublished series I wrote a moving scene that involves the kidnapping of one of my characters, and her husband goes on a desperate hunt to find her. The intense love and fear he has is enough to choke anyone up with tears. This song, which is about searching for your lost love until your dying day, really helped me to capture the emotion I needed to write the scene. Give it a listen!

Writing About: A Kidnapping

2.    Titanium by David Guetta Feat. Sia

The heroine in my series had a difficult past. When I was writing about the time when she ran away at sixteen, I listened to Titanium on repeat. I could picture her running for her life, and was pleasantly surprised when I watched the video and saw it was pretty similar to what I had written. Great minds think alike. ;)

3.    Nobody’s Home by Avril Lavigne

After my MC runs away, she lives on the streets for a couple of weeks. This song by Avril is about not having a home or a family to turn to, and was my theme for this time in my heroine’s life.

4.    Russian Roulette by Rihanna

During a moment in the third book of my series a character is tortured quite brutally by an ex boyfriend. Russian Roulette is a dark song about a man taunting a woman and forcing her to kill herself. It is a chilling song and it gave me everything I needed to write a shocking and devastating torture scene.

5.    Into the Light by In This Moment

Whenever I listen to this song my eyes fill with tears. The lyrics, about a loved one dying and having to saying goodbye, are so heart-wrenching. I listened to it while writing a moment when my heroine loses a loved one, because I knew it would put me in the frame of mind the scene required.

Warning: This song may make you cry too!

Today is also the World Wide Release of Hurricane Crimes, so I’d like to share the 5 songs that would make the soundtrack for my short story:

(When Beth ventures out of her house and into severe weather.)
(When Beth finds out Donovan is a murder suspect.)
(For the scene when Beth and Donovan are intimate.)
5. Hurricane by 30 Seconds to Mars (The Theme Song)

QUESTIONS:
1.    Do you listen to music while you write or do you need silence?
2.    Is there a song (or songs) that has inspired your writing?

  1. Whether I use music seems to come down mostly to where I'm writing. If I'm alone, then there will typically be quite a lot in the background, but I find that it has to be stuff I've listened to plenty of times so that it doesn't become a distraction.

    1. I've found that new music can distract me too, because I'm paying more attention to the lyrics and not writing.

Thank you for commenting, Stu! :)

  2. It depends on what type of writing I'm doing if the music is going. If I'm writing a WIP, silence. Blogging, journaling, and such, require music. =)

  4. Let me just tell you how much I love your taste in music, Chrys! Especially the Avril Lavigne and 30 Seconds to Mars. By the way, Felix and I are going to the Lincoln Park/30 Seconds to Mars tour in August when they come to Jersey=)
Depending on what I am writing, I listen to all types of music. But some of my favorites are Hans Zimmer, Darshan Ambient, Annie Lenox, The Pretenders, Pink Floyd, Cold Play, 30 Seconds to Mars, M83, Florence and the Machine, James Horner, David Arkenstone... I could go on and on. I guess it all depends on the plot at the time of my writing i.e. the scene and surroundings=) Great post!!

    1. Thank you, Gina! That's the best compliment I've gotten in a long time. I take my music pretty seriously and have a broad taste.

I am completely jealous that you'll be going to the Linkin Park/30 Seconds to Mars tour. You'll have to tell me all about it!

What I listen to also depends on what I am writing. If I need to write action or a fight, I listen to rock like All that Remains and 10 Years. If I have to write romance, I go for some 90's music (Savage Garden, Toni Braxton). For parts that are neutral I listen to whatever I'm in the mood for (Imagine Dragons, Ellie Goulding, Alexz Johnson... and that list can also go on and on). :)

  5. I'm one of those few that need silence to write. Anything audio is very distracting. Yet I do get a song stuck in my head now and then that fits whatever I'm writing. Too bad almost all the music I heard nowadays is dictated by my 3 year old! *LOL*

  9. Hi Chris. I did a writing group exercise once, where we had to write to music, the same scene. Amazing what a difference the music made to the story. Great post.

  10. I loved the first one but didn't listen to the others. I used to have a way to listen to music but I haven't for awhile. We just bought a new music system and I think that will really help me overcome some of my writer's block.

  11. The intensity of your songs tells me something about your work. I find music distracting when I'm writing, but I do like to think about the songs that reflect what I'm writing at a particular time. Here's hoping your story does well.

    1. I do write about a lot of intense things, especially in my unpublished series. I was lucky to find songs to reflect those moments.

Thank you! I hope so, too. :)

  12. I don't tend to listen to music when writing, I am one of those who prefer silence, however music can stimulate powerful emotions so I might listen too it before a writing session.
PS The final song did reduce me to tears!

    1. Music certainly can inspire emotions. Listening to music before writing if you need silence is a great idea!

I warned you the last song could make you cry. At least I'm not the only one who sheds tears while listening to it. ;)

  13. I have a certain type of music, or maybe certain type of musicians voice, that I like to write to. Phillip Phillips and The Eli Young Band are two albums that I love to write to.

  14. I'm listening to Somewhere as I type. Oh, it's nice. Really nice! When I write or revise, I need music in the background, but not loud enough to distract me. These days, it's music by Yann Tiersen or Mark Pinkus. Other days, I get really moved by Dire Straits's 'Brothers in Arms.'

    1. My music can be loud, not eardrum vibrating loud, but I do tend to dance in my seat, bob my head, and sing along to the lyrics while I am writing. I guess I can multi-task. ;)

  20. You've probably visited my blog to know how much I love music. I listen to all kinds of stuff when I'm visiting blogs or composing blog post, but if I writing with intensity where I really want to focus on scenes and continuity then I usually keep classical music playing low in the background. Lyrics can distract me.
